The first Charity Champion named for the 2017 season is The Shepherd’s Heart Food Pantry, announced TFNB today.

In 2016, The Shepherd’s Heart distributed 1.4 million pounds of food to nearly 29,000 families in Central Texas. Since the nonprofit was founded in 2010,  it has assisted over 200,000 families and distributed nine million pounds. Baylor student athletes Madi O’Neal and Trevon Lewis recently helped the organization distribute food to needy families.

The Shepherd’s Heart is seeking support to secure several upgrades:

  • Replace light fixtures in its facility at an estimated cost of $6,000
  • New or gently used delivery truck with a lift gate at an approximate cost of $20,000
  • Three new computers

Along with the on-field presentation at the Liberty vs. Baylor game on September 2, 2017 and a Baylor basketball game next year, TFNB funding a marketing campaign to raise awareness about The Shepherd’s Heart. The Shepherd’s Heart staff, leadership team and board of directors will also be invited to participate in leadership development provided by 360 Solutions starting in 2018.

“Our greatest desire as a Charity Champion is to become effective in elevating people through education and empowerment to help them overcome the ‘poverty mindset’ and change the future of their family for generations to come,” said Bob Gager, executive director of The Shepherd’s Heart. “Our desire is to increase the service we provide by finding ways to increase our capacity and have the pantry open more days of the week.”

In the Charity Champion nomination submission, the nominator wrote:

We currently assist 800 to 900 families each week. Our goal is to provide food and services to those in need. Our efforts are to feed the hungry now and find poverty ending solutions for those whom we assist. We are also collaborating with TSTC in starting an Aquaponics project to provide food and potential employment and a revenue source to fund Shepherd’s Heart.
